Pho3nix alumna Skye Nicolson has been crowned World Boxing Council featherweight boxing champion, defeating Denmark’s Sarah Mahfoud via unanimous decision in Las Vegas on April 7.
Prior to the victory the Australian boxer was the interim WBC featherweight champion, having beaten Sabrina Maribel Perez last September and defending against Lucy Wildheart in November. Erstwhile WBC featherweight champion Amanda Serrano then vacated the title in December, opening the pathway for Nicolson’s world championship-winning fight.
Nicolson has won 10 out of 10 bouts since she began her professional career in early 2022, relocating to the United Kingdom to pursue her dreams and becoming Australia’s highest-paid female boxer in the process. She also currently owns the WBC silver featherweight and the inaugural Commonwealth Boxing Council featherweight titles.
During her amateur career she won a gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and bronze at the 2016 World Championships. The Pho3nix Foundation supported her journey to her first and final Olympic Games in Tokyo as part of the inaugural Pho3nix Athlete Program, where she finished 5th.
Nicolson has challenged Serrano – who still holds the WBA, WBO and IBF belts – to a fight which she hopes to bring Down Under to help grow women’s boxing even further back home.
She once said, “The support I’ve received from the Pho3nix Athletes Program was invaluable in helping me best prepare for Tokyo and I’m really driven to inspire the next generation of kids whatever sport they choose.”
The Pho3nix Foundation is proud to see this Pho3nix alumna continue to inspire and rise to the challenge.
