The Pho3nix Foundation is proud to recognise this quarter’s Pho3nix Sports Awards winners who have inspired with their incredible sports journeys and achievements.
The Pho3nix Sports Awards recognise individuals who showcase remarkable athletic accomplishments while reflecting the values of inclusivity, dedication, community involvement, and pursuit of excellence that the nonprofit Pho3nix Foundation stands for. The Pho3nix Sports Awards also aim to foster community and connection among participants, supporters, athletes and most importantly, fans by celebrating the achievements of those who are part of the Pho3nix family as participants, supporters, or mentors.
With a list of nominees representing more diverse regions than previously, this quarter’s Pho3nix Sports Awards public voting period drew votes from 10 nations and six continents including Chile, South Africa, Argentina, Germany and China for the first time as well as Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States and the Philippines. The number of votes also grew by more than 166% – a sure sign the Pho3nix message and movement is spreading even further around the world.
Out of sixteen nominees across four categories with the winners determined by public voting, these four awardees were announced on the live awards show streamed on February 7.
Pho3nix Extraordinary Performance Award: Alexa Leary
The Pho3nix Extraordinary Performance Award goes to a Pho3nix who has delivered a sporting performance that, whether in its effort or the result, has truly inspired, or in their journey to a sporting achievement has captured the attention and imagination of sports fans.
Alexa Leary is a para-swimming sensation, defying odds after a life-changing accident just two years ago to be on the cusp of Paris 2024 selection. With her gold and silver victories at the 2023 World Para Swimming Championships as well as AIS Discovery of the Year at the prestigious Swimming Australia Awards, Alexa’s journey inspires a world beyond strokes and lanes.
Pho3nix Ethos Award: Margielyn Didal
A member of the Pho3nix family is nominated for the Ethos Award not just for their sporting prowess but also for their character and efforts away from the field of play displaying the ideals at the core of the Foundation.
Margielyn Didal, the spirited dynamo skateboarder of the Pho3nix Athlete Program, brought contagious energy to the Pho3nix Future Camp and Pho3nix Kids Triathlon in Phuket, Thailand. Radiating boundless enthusiasm and playful guidance, she not only mentored aspiring youth athletes but also made dreams reality by teaching kids how to skate.
Pho3nix Kids Award: Summer Isabelle Macalin
Each of the hundreds of thousands of children who attend a Pho3nix event every year have a story that embodies the Pho3nix ideals. The Pho3nix Kids Award recognises a participant who has inspired by showing all of us what it means to rise.
At the Pho3nix Kids Triathlon in the Philippines early last year, Summer Isabelle Macalino tackled the duathlon on a small bike with training wheels. Fast forward to the end of the year: Summer crushed her first triathlon, proudly pedaling on a brand-new bike without training wheels. Her growth and determination embody the Pho3nix spirit, proving that every small step can lead to a giant leap of achievement.
Pho3nix Next Gen Award: Athena ‘Rain’ Chang
The Pho3nix Next Gen Award recognises a member of the Pho3nix community aged 14 to 20 who inspires their peers with their athletic achievements and leads by example on their journey on the Pho3nix Pathway.
Athena ‘Rain’ Chang stood out at Pho3nix Future Camp Thailand as the only open-water swimmer, with the tenacity to hold a 15-minute plank — a new record across Future Camps! Already a nationally top-ranked 1500m swimmer and long-course champion with multiple national golds, she was recently selected for the Philippine National Open Water Swimming Team — the youngest swimmer and the only one still in university.
