As Jonny Brownlee announces his retirement from professional triathlon, the Pho3nix Foundation celebrates one of the most decorated male triathletes in Olympic history and an athlete whose influence has extended far beyond the finish line.
Across an extraordinary career spanning two decades, Jonny has helped define an era of British and international triathlon, inspiring a generation through his performances on the biggest stages in the sport.
His achievements place him among triathlon’s all-time greats. Olympic bronze at London 2012 was followed by silver at Rio 2016, before Jonny completed his Olympic medal collection with gold as part of Great Britain’s victorious mixed relay team at Tokyo 2020.
Alongside his Olympic success, Jonny became World Triathlon Champion in 2012, twice won the World Sprint Triathlon Championship and represented Great Britain at the highest level for more than a decade.
But medals tell only part of his story.
Part of the Pho3nix family
Jonny joined the Pho3nix Team in 2022, bringing to the Foundation not simply his extraordinary sporting credentials, but a shared belief in the power of sport to change lives.
Together with his brother Alistair, Jonny established the Brownlee Foundation to inspire children from all backgrounds to become active and experience the enjoyment, confidence and opportunities that sport can provide.
That shared purpose has formed the foundation of a longstanding relationship between the Brownlee Foundation and Pho3nix Foundation, working together to create opportunities for young people across the United Kingdom to experience sport in an inclusive and welcoming environment.
Through their work together, thousands of children have been encouraged to have a go, discover new sports and, most importantly, experience the simple joy of being active.
For Jonny, using the platform created by his sporting career to give back has always been an important part of the journey.
Jonny Brownlee said: “I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the career I’ve had and to have experienced so many amazing moments through triathlon. Sport has given me so much, and being able to use that experience to encourage young people to get active has always been really important to me.
“Working with Pho3nix and seeing the impact we can have through the Brownlee Foundation has been something I’m incredibly proud of. If we can help a child discover sport, enjoy being active and experience some of the opportunities that Alistair and I were lucky enough to have growing up, that’s a pretty special legacy to be part of.
“Retiring from professional racing is obviously the end of a huge chapter in my life, but it certainly doesn’t change how passionate I am about triathlon or about helping the next generation discover what sport can give them.”
A legacy that continues
Jonny Brownlee steps away from professional racing with a collection of achievements very few athletes will ever match.
Olympic champion. Three-time Olympic medallist. World champion. Multiple world title winner. MBE.
Yet his legacy cannot be measured through medals alone.
It can be found in the generation of athletes inspired by watching him race and in the thousands of children who have been encouraged to get active through the work of the Brownlee Foundation and Pho3nix.
Throughout his career, Jonny has demonstrated the values at the heart of Pho3nix: resilience, determination, a passion for sport and a commitment to using sporting success to inspire others.
