The tale of 11-year-old speedway rider Jakub Godzina from Sulęcin, Poland, made national headlines when his family’s van was stolen on July 20, taking with it his entire sporting world: a Suzuki speedway motorcycle, custom Kevlar suit, a helmet signed by Bartosz Zmarzlik, bicycles, boots, protective gear, and training equipment.
Although the van was recovered, none of the equipment was. The loss was valued at 40,000 PLN (about 9,400 EUR), but more tragically, it stripped Jakub of the material capability to continue pursuing the sport he loves.
The story moved thousands of people to act, including five-time World Speedway Champion Bartosz Zmarzlik who donated a new speedway bike and helmet, Stal Gorzów club, speedway fans across Poland, and the Pho3nix Foundation, whose mission is to support and inspire young athletes around the world.
“Sport gives young people not only joy but also strength to overcome challenges,” said Pho3nix founder Sebastian Kulczyk. “We wanted Jakub to continue pursuing his passion and believing in his dreams. We’re happy we could help him return to the track.”
On September 4, at the Tri Tour Sports Club in Dąbrowa near Poznań, the home of Pho3nix in Poland, Jakub received a new motorcycle and gear from Pho3nix CEO Wojciech Kruczyński, who said, “At Pho3nix, we believe every child deserves the chance to grow through sport. Jakub’s story shows how important timely support can be. This initiative proves that together, we can truly change the future of young athletes.”
With new equipment and the solidarity of the speedway community behind him, Jakub has resumed training and now represents Just Fun GUKS Speedway Wawrów.
