Vincent Luis: Rising from the Ashes to the Top of the World

As Vincent Luis closes the curtain on a professional career spanning more than 20 years, Pho3nix Foundation celebrates not only his achievements in racing, but also the way he embodied what it means to be a Pho3nix: rising through adversity, triumphing from the ashes and seeing endings as opportunities for new beginnings. Throughout his career, Vincent blazed his own path to the pinnacle of the sport, repeatedly defying the odds to reach the top.

Selected as one of the first athletes to join the Pho3nix Team in 2020, Vincent began his partnership with the Foundation in an unprecedented year for sport. After a season disrupted by cancelled races, he successfully defended his world title at the one-day World Triathlon Championship staged amid the global pandemic. The following year, despite a leg injury in the lead-up to the Tokyo Olympics, he helped propel France to bronze in the mixed relay, securing the country’s first-ever Olympic medal in triathlon.

Throughout his career, the three-time French national champion played a pivotal role in establishing France as a dominant force in international triathlon. He became the first French athlete to win the World Triathlon Championship in the series format and was instrumental in France’s three mixed relay world titles.

In 2022, Vincent faced one of the most difficult periods of his career, returning from a potentially career-ending foot injury and heart surgery with the ambition of earning a place at Paris 2024. When discretionary selection ruled out a fourth Olympic appearance, he turned his attention to a new challenge: long-distance racing and its ultimate test, the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, Hawaii.

His transition to full-distance racing began at Challenge Roth in 2025, a race he had watched his father finish years earlier. That experience had sparked his young imagination and helped nurture a love for the sport. Vincent recorded the second-fastest debut finish in the race’s history to place fourth. It was an impressive introduction, but he knew there was still work to do.

He secured his place on the World Championship start line with a fourth-place finish at IRONMAN Texas, followed by fifth at IRONMAN Frankfurt in another highly competitive field. An IRONMAN 70.3 three months out provided a final test of speed and fitness before he headed to Hawaii to put the finishing touches on his preparation, fully aware of the challenge that lay ahead and approaching Madame Pele’s capricious conditions with deep respect.

At Kona, on a course that has humbled some of the sport’s greatest champions, Vincent delivered the performance of his career. In his first appearance at the IRONMAN World Championship, he claimed the world title, becoming the first Frenchman to win on the Big Island and only the third male athlete to win the race on debut.

After more than two decades in professional triathlon, Vincent had found a new way to reach the summit of the sport. His retirement at the top is a fitting conclusion to a career defined not by a single achievement, but by his ability to adapt, recover and keep pursuing new goals. His final tally includes four individual world titles, three team world titles, an Olympic bronze medal and countless victories on the international stage.

Luis said: “I’ve had moments when I thought my time at the top might be over, but each time, I found a new reason to keep going and a different challenge to chase. After everything that came before, to discover something new in the sport and reach the top again means a lot to me. Being part of Pho3nix from the beginning has been a special part of my journey, and I hope my story shows that setbacks don’t have to define you; sometimes they can lead you exactly where you wanted to go.”

Vincent’s journey stands as an example to the next generation of athletes that Pho3nix hopes to inspire: that the path to greatness is rarely straightforward, that adversity can be met with renewed purpose and that there is always another summit to pursue.
