Joan had been on a year-long unpaid leave from her job as a nurse in her quest for qualification, funding training camps and racing out of her own pocket with the support of loans and crowdfunding. But, when the Tokyo Olympics were postponed and her nation called for healthcare workers, she returned to work.

Balancing the demands of her job with training, Joan also coaches a group of aspiring rowers as she looks to leave a legacy in what is a minor sport in Singapore – she will likely be just the second Singaporean rower to compete at the Games.
